Quality export products

There are 305 organic dairy farms in the Netherlands,
with a total livestock of 16,000 cows. Their products are
extremely popular on the domestic market, but export
figures are constantly rising. Another 75 organic farms
specialise in goat or sheep dairy. Their produce is
mainly exported.

Some 235 farms produce organic beef and pork. Demand
for organic beef has risen dramatically in recent years.
As a result most organic meat consumed in the Netherlands
is imported.

Organic poultry meat and eggs are important export
products for the Netherlands
. With more than one million
hens, organic poultry farms account for 4 percent of total
poultry production in the Netherlands. Three quarters of
all organic eggs produced in the Netherlands are exported.

Carrots, onions, cabbages and potatoes  are the main
cash crops in organic plant production. They are all major
export products.

Due to the state-of-the-art greenhouse technology the
Netherlands developed, the economic value of greenhouse
crops
 is very high. Major greenhouse crops are tomato,
sweet pepper and cucumber.

The main organic fruit crops in the Netherlands are
apples and pears, but also berries and wine grapes.
In addition to these, many other crops are grown
organically, including ornamentals, flowers, bulbs and
mushrooms, some of which are key export products.
